Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born in Lynn located in Massachusetts. Her parents were Lithuanian Jews Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. After her father died in the role of a carnival barker as a young girl She was required to keep the family going by working as a cook and server. Ruth went to school in Boston's tenement region, which was the most deplorable. She left the school she was attending within two years of her education in order to pursue acting as a profession. The path was difficult to pursue. While she was offered an opportunity as a hat check girl in New York posing as a writer for a mystery publication however, there were no theatre opportunities that came her way. After working as a hat-check woman in a nightclub she resigned and went back to Boston. In Boston, she made a buck as an usherette by during the day and then at night was a part of the New England Repertory Company. It was her first role as an actor. In addition, she was a drama student and ultimately graduated from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
